The village is under occupation. The Jews are herded into the stables. Demidovich, a district committee member, comes to Serafima, and she takes him to the dugout. Serafima visits the family of Nokhim, a local photographer, in the ghetto. The dugout's residents attempt to free the ghetto prisoners, but the Jews refuse to follow them.
